矢部 文、主宰｜Aya Yabe, Principal
1985年より、ニューヨーク補習授業校初等部、中等部、高等部で教鞭を執る。生徒の日英バイリンガルとしての強みを活かすカリキュラム作成を依頼され、2002年よりニューヨークタイムズと朝日新聞の記事を比較しながら時事問題を学び、批判的思考力を磨く「メディア」講座を開設し、その担当に。さらに2008年、高等部の「大学進学ガイダンス」を担当したことをきっかけに、米国生まれ育ちの生徒の進学を多面的にサポートすることを決意。
2015年補習校を退職後、日英バイリンガル生徒を対象とする日本語作文教室を発足。続いて日米の大学進学にチャレンジする生徒とその家族を対象としたコーチングサービスを開始。総合的な進路指導はもとより、英語ネイティブのスタッフとともに、エッセイのブレーンストーミングや添削など「書くこと」に重点をおいたガイダンスを提供。一方、翻訳家としてのキャリアも長く、法務やマーケティングなどの実務翻訳の傍ら、Nassau BOCES（ニューヨーク近郊ロングアイランドの広域教育委員会）の通訳・翻訳を通して日本人児童生徒を支援。さらに、『コンピュータユーザのための健康サバイバルガイド』、『ウィッピング・ガール』など書籍翻訳も手掛ける。早稲田大学第一文学部・マイアミ大学（オハイオ州）大学院人類学部卒。
Aya Sensei started her teaching career in New York at the Japanese Weekend School of New York, where she taught K-12 students. She was asked to develop a new course that highlighted the strengths of Japanese and English bilingual students. She created a curriculum, Media, in which students discussed current events by comparing articles in the New York Times and the Asahi Shimbun, to hone their critical thinking skills. In 2008, when she was assigned to handle “College Admission Guidance” for high school students, Aya Sensei decided to provide multifaceted support for students born and raised in the US who did not attend weekend school.
After departing the Weekend School in 2015, she launched a “sakubun” class for bilingual students in English and Japanese, followed by the launch of a coaching service for students who seek admission to challenging universities in Japan and the U.S. Working with native English-speaking staff members, Aya Sensei provides comprehensive college and career path guidance with the main focus on “writing” from brainstorming essays to giving feedback.
In addition, she has had a long career as a business translator, mainly for legal and marketing services. She also works as a translator for the Nassau BOCES to assist Japanese-speaking students and their parents. She has published translated versions of such critically acclaimed bestsellers as “The Survival Guide for Computer Users” and “The Whipping Girl.”
